Water for Production Regional Centre West planned to design and construct Nyakasenyi Valley tank in Ntoroko District and the center therefore intended to carry out soil sampling and testing to discover the available nutrients in the soil and also enable the agronomists make informed decisions on different agronomic practices. SADRiNE Consulting Group Limited was contracted by the Ministry of Water and Environment/ Water for Production Regional Centre – West to carry out soil sampling and testing to discover the available nutrients in the soil. The main objective of this study was to characterize the physical and chemical properties of the soils at the proposed valley tank site and the surrounding areas in Kyabukunguru village, Kyabukunguru parish, Butungama sub-county in Ntoroko district and evaluate the land for irrigation development. Specific objectives were to;
- Record each pit/profile location with a GPS device and photograph each location and record any visual observations;
- Identify the soil horizons at each location and the depth and physical condition of the top soil layer, describe and classify;
- Obtain soil samples from the exposed profiles for laboratory analysis, typically consisting of one bulk sample from each inspection pit/profile, but may include additional samples from each pit if judged necessary due to obvious changes in characteristics or signs of contamination within the exposed profile, as required;
- Send the soil samples to National Agricultural Research Laboratories for testing and assessing fertility.
