The challenge

Ministry of Water and Environment Water for Production Regional Centre – West planned to design and construct Nyakasenyi Valley tank in Ntoroko District. As part of the data collection activities, SADRiNE Consulting Group Limited was contracted by the Ministry of Water and Environment/ Water for Production Regional Centre – West to conduct geotechnical investigations to obtain information on the physical properties of soil earthworks for proposed valley tank and for repair of distress to earthworks caused by subsurface conditions. The aim was to carry out;

  • Field investigation of the site conditions including soil sampling,
  • Laboratory Analysis of the properties of sub-surface soils, and
  • Prepare the geotechnical investigation report.

The services

Data Review

We collected and studied relevant geological and seismic information for the study area from available sources,

Terrain Reconnaissance

This was done to map the geomorphology and pprofile existing cuttings or exposures to supplement the subsurface geotechnical investigation,

Subsurface Investigation

Two (2) trial pits were dug by peak axe up 4.0m depth and profiled before back filling was done.

Sample Recovery

Disturbed and undisturbed soils samples were recovered from the trial pits and sent to the geotechnical laboratory for testing,

Laboratory Testing

We performed laboratory testing for disturbed samples including Natural Moisture Content, Particle size distribution by Sieve analysis, Atterberg limits (Liquid, Plastic and Linear Shrinkage Limits), Chemical tests for water and soil (pH value, Chloride and Sulphate content) and for undisturbed samples including Permeability Direct Shear Strength,

Report writing

We compiled the geotechnical investigations report comprising of our findings of the subsurface soil conditions, engineering analyses made on the laboratory tests and recommendations suitable for design and construction of the tank.
