The challenge

National Water and Sewage Cooperation (NWSC) is planning to construct a Sewage Treatment Plant and a Water Treatment plant in Mbale District on 10 acres of land. The water treatment plant and sewage treatment plant shall sit on 4 acres and 6 acres respectively as specified in the terms of reference.

To be able to design the above facilities, geotechnical surveys were required and to this aim SADRiNE Consulting Group Limited was contracted by TYSULT Engineers to undertake these Geotechnical Surveys in relation to the proposed constructions. The aim of the investigations was to;

  • Carry out a literature search (review the geology of the areas where the plant shall be located, search available physiographical data, hydrological data and previous site investigations data, along with any available well water/swampy records;
  • Carry out preliminary site reconnaissance to physically examine land forms, drainage, and erosion features;
  • Conduct field explorations including core drilling of 4 boreholes, collecting of disturbed and undisturbed samples, water table monitoring, carry out laboratory testing and present a soils report.

The services

Data Review

We reviewed published geologic maps, aerial photographs, in-house documents, and other literature pertaining to the site,

Site Reconnaissance

We performed a site reconnaissance to review general site conditions and performed onsite geologic and structural observations,

Subsurface Explorations

4 boreholes were drilled up to a depth of 15mbg and different soil strata encountered were logged/profiled and ground monitored where encountered,

Sample Recovery

Disturbed samples were recovered at every 1.5m using STP Slit spoon sampler and undisturbed samples were recovered at every change in the soil strata,

Insitu testing

Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) were performed in all the four (4) boreholes at every 1.5m intervals to assess the in-situ bearing capacity;

Laboratory Testing

We performed laboratory testing for disturbed samples including Natural Moisture Content, Particle size distribution by Sieve analysis, Atterberg limits (Liquid, Plastic and Linear Shrinkage Limits), Chemical tests for water and soil (pH value, Chloride and Sulphate content) and for undisturbed samples including Consolidation, Direct Shear Strength and Undrained Shear Test (Unconsolidated Undrained Triaxial).

Report writing

We compiled the geotechnical investigations report comprising of our findings of the subsurface soil conditions, engineering analyses made on the laboratory tests and recommendations on the type and depth of foundation to be used.
