Luke 11:35 (NIV)
See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.
How can light be darkness? In physics, “Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation that enables the human eye to see or make things visible. It is also defined as radiation that is visible to the human eye”. Therefore that Light does not enable the human eye to see is automatically darkness. We can say darkness is a type of light. Luke in 11:35 warns us to make sure that the light in us can make things visible.
So what is Light for a Christian? In the Bible Light is associated with holiness, goodness, knowledge, wisdom, grace, hope and God’s revelation. While darkness is associated with evil, sin and despair. How can a born again Christian filled with the Holy Spirit have light that is darkness? How can darkness be part of the Light of a Christian?
At night in darkness, how clearer you are able to see things depends on the amount of light emitted by the element you are using to make things visible. Hebrews 12:1 advises us to “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles”. Therefore it is possible that a Christian can have light that is darkness. “See to it” in Luke 11:35 puts the responsibility on us to make sure that the light in us can make us see and live Christian Life clearly as required of God. God has empowered us to work on the advice in Hebrews 12:1.
Have you ever heard someone preaching passionately about a topic but offside. These days we have Christian Leaders defending divorce using scriptures. What a dark light in them!!!!
Now days in Uganda everything is interpreted on tribal sentiments. It does not matter whether what is spoken is right or wrong. But from what tribe is the person?
Sometime last year, every time I would hear a name from a certain part of Uganda, I would find myself saying “Those are the ones”. Or if a “big car” passes by; “Those are the ones”. It was even worse if the owner of the car was from a certain tribe. I was convicted by the Holy Spirit to get away from TV News and some Social Media sites if I was to make sure that the Light in me is not darkness.
I maybe the only Christian who has Light that is darkness. But I do not think so. Always pray to the Holy Spirit to reveal the darkness in you. As Christians we are supposed to live life in abundance.
