Introduction
On 04th July 2023, I had a pleasure to fly for the first time for a 50-minute journey from Uganda to Kenya. Whereas I had set to write about my experience, I was struck with a reflection on my two photographs above. Photographs have a unique way of capturing moments that hold deep significance in our lives, telling stories that human beings can relate too and evoking emotions.
As I stumbled upon my two photographs from different stages of my life, the contrast between them left me pondering over the lessons I have learned along my journey. One photograph depicts my younger self, adorned in worn-out clothes, symbolizing the limited means I grew up with. The other photograph portrays me as an adult, standing at the international departure signpost, ready to check-in to fly back to my motherland. The comparison between these two photos symbolizes the remarkable transformation that has taken place in my life. Let us delve into remarkable changes that have shaped my life.
Childhood Photo: Dirty Tone Dress
In my childhood photo, I can be seen wearing a dress that was dirty and tone. My carefree spirit is evident that I was a playful girl and my dress speak volumes of the circumstances I grew up in as a child. My “dirty tone” dress serves as a visual representation of the challenges and hardships I faced during my early years. Growing up as children, our parents had limited resources. We were financially unstable and every year that past was a struggle of its own. My photograph represents a humble beginning, a starting point that shaped my character and resilience.
Adulthood Photo: International Airport Ready to Board
Fast forward to the present, as an adult, you see me standing confidently at an international airport ready to check in for departure from Kenya to my motherland, Uganda. The airport, a symbol of freedom, opportunity, and global connectivity stands in contrast to the backdrop of my childhood photo. It represents the pinnacle of my hard work, determination, and the opportunities I have seized along the way.
The Transformation and growth
As we examine my two photographs side by side, it becomes evident that my journey has been one of transformation. The shift from dirty tone clothes to the atmosphere of an international airport signifies the progress I have made in my life. It speaks volumes about the perseverance and determination I possess to overcome obstacles and chase my dreams. Undoubtedly, the experiences I have had throughout my life have played a significant role in shaping the person I have become. The challenges I faced as a child have instilled in me a sense of resilience, resourcefulness, and appreciation for the opportunities that lie ahead. Furthermore, the exposure to different cultures and perspectives, which the international airport represents, broadened my horizons, and enriched my understanding of the world.
The transformation from a child in dirty clothes to an adult ready to embrace the world is more than just a superficial change. My childhood photo in dirty tone clothes serves as a reminder of the challenges I have overcome in life, the growth and maturity I have attained, and the lessons learned along my path. My childhood experiences shaped me, but I am currently making conscious choices in my life by harnessing the power of agency. Simultaneously, my adulthood photo at the international airport serves as a reminder of the endless possibilities that await me and the heights I can reach.

As we navigate through life, reflecting upon our own photographs; may we discover profound insights and lessons. And may we not just find lessons out of these photographs. But apply those lessons in our daily life to create a positive impact on ourselves and the world around us. Embracing change and learning from our past is what propels us forward on this beautiful journey called life. Resist the idea of comparing yourself on other people and compare yourself with you. Someone said, “Comparison is the best way to judge our progress but not with others, compare your yesterday with your today.” Did you catch that? Just go back to your album and compare yourself with you.
Everyone if not most of us has a childhood and adult photo somewhere in our albums, right? If you look critically at your photos what comes to your mind? Are you able to reflect on your past experiences? Find lessons and how you can use them as a foundation for growth and self-improvement? This is a call for all of us as we continue our life’s journey – May we all find inspiration in the photographs of our lives and continue to learn and grow from the lessons they hold.
