Paul and Timothy
From the Bible in the book of 2 Timothy 2:1; we come across Paul calling Timothy “my dear son”. You may think Timothy was a biological son of Paul. Please no! Timothy was from the Lycaonian city of Lystra or of Derbe in Asia Minor, born of a Jewish mother who had become a Christian believer, and a Greek father. During one of his missions, Paul met Timothy and they became great companions and partners. Along the way, the bond between the two became so strong to the point of “father-son relationship”.
Question
Apart from your biological parents and relatives, who else can call you “my dear son/daughter”. Timothy did not appear in the Bible because of his parents and relatives. But because of his mentor and coach Paul. Much as your parents have a great contribution to your success, along the way you will have to pick up “fathers/mothers” outside your biological family. A father is someone who wishes you the best. They are happy to see you doing better than them. A father is someone who can talk and you listen.
You can have different fathers for each of the spheres of your life. The most common are the “Spiritual fathers”. Prof. Denis Kalumba at the University of Cape Town http://www.uct.ac.za is my “academic father”. You can have a “business father”, “engineering father”, “geotechnical engineering father”, “marriage father”, “health father”, “financial father” etc. If you do not have a father in any of these spheres, then you are an orphan. And we all know what being an orphan means. You are better off being a son/daughter.
Conclusion
My hope is that you use the December holiday season to think about someone who can become a father/mother to you in one of the spheres of your life.
Great piece Sir.
