Geotechnical Engineering in Uganda Series (020)_Consistency vs Intensity

Culture of SADRiNE

As part of our culture at SADRiNE https://sadrineinfrastructureservices.com/blogs/, we always have aerobics in the evening to keep our body and mind healthy but also for team building. Over time we have observed some colleagues who are very active and efficient in the first fifteen (15) minutes of the one hour. Thereafter they struggle to finish the exercises. They use all their energy in the first quarter only to realize they have nothing left. If you are to succeed at anything, long term strategy and thinking is the answer. Consistency is very important in all our endeavors.

Advice

In one of the conferences I attended this year, a communication specialist from Kenya advised us to be consistent in what we post on social media if we are to grow a bigger following. Choose a topic you are passionate about and endeavor to post about it weekly. With time people will buy into you. They will get to know who you are. When you post about many things, people will be confused on your identity. The whole of this year I have been posting about related topics on personal and professional development. My prayer is that with time I will grow a bigger following. Naturally, people will doubt you at the start. To them it is just a matter of time that you give up. With consistency they realize that you are serious.

Conclusion

Many years are needed to build a great career. Do not be taken over by short-term achievements. Do not burnout early in your career. Long-term consistency trumps short-term intensity. Intensity is the amount of effort you are putting into anything in life. On the other side, consistency is the degree to which an activity is carried out regularly on a consistent basis. For example, someone who exercises for thirty (30) minutes will achieve greater results than a person who exercises for three (3) hours once in a week.

Galatians 6:9
“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”

The most important thing is not to give up. Prof. Denis Kalumba joined the University of Cape Town  around 2019. It has taken him more than ten years to build a legacy.
